چکیده

We have identified the marine fish taxa that are most vulnerable to exploitation, by compiling an index of intrinsic vulnerability based on life history traits. Since 1950, the global fish catch has been increasingly dominated by species with low intrinsic vulnerability, indicated by a decline in mean vulnerability of the taxa in the catches. This decline is strongest in catches of coral reef fishes, probably as a result of overexploitation of the more vulnerable species. The change is less apparent in estuaries, where fish communities are more transient. The opposite is observed at seamounts, where more vulnerable species have become exploited and serially depleted in recent years. Rates of change in the mean vulnerability index in the catches from different areas are negatively correlated with the number of threatened fishes on the IUCN Red List. Particularly, catches from the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean regions are characterized by a high abundance of threatened fishes and by strong declines in the mean vulnerability index. Our findings suggest that fishing largely alters the community structure of coral reef fishes, which may detrimentally affect the ecosystem. Attention should also be given to deep water demersal and benthopelagic fish assemblages, especially those around seamounts, which are intrinsically vulnerable to fishing. The index of intrinsic vulnerability thus provides a novel tool for fisheries management and conservation.

Using an Expert System to Evaluate Vulnerabilities and Conservation Risk of Marine Fishes from Fishing

Today, fishing is the only large-scale wildlife hunting activity. Unsurprisingly, it has contributed to the depletion and extirpation of numerous marine fish populations. We develop a fuzzy logic expert system to estimate the risk of depletion of marine fish populations from fishing. The frrst component of this expert system predicts the intrinsic vulnerability of marine fishes (i.e., fishes' i...

Survey of overexploited amount of tuna fish (tuna fish, seer fish and billfish) in Iranian Southern Waters (Persian Gulf and Oman Sea)

Tuna fish from the order Perciform and the scombridae family, with 15 genera and 52 species, it has been an important economic fish for most countries and the most valuable economic aquatic are in industrial catch in the world. The rate of overfishing in the southern waters (from 1997 to 2016) in 2019 was based on CMSY model and R software and Bayesian status approach (Problem solving based on ...

A Global Analysis of the Relationship between Farmed Seaweed Production and Herbivorous Fish Catch.

Globally, farmed seaweed production is expanding rapidly in shallow marine habitats. While seaweed farming provides vital income to millions of artisanal farmers, it can negatively impact shallow coral reef and seagrass habitats. However, seaweed farming may also potentially provide food subsidies for herbivorous reef fish such as the Siganidae, a valuable target family, resulting in increased ...

Evaluation of Water Resources Exploitation in a Karst Region Using Intrinsic Vulnerability Assessment

Groundwater vulnerability assessment is of crucial importance for land use/cover management. Some methods have been proposed specifically for the karst hydrogeological settings. Among them, COP and PaPRIKa, as two commonly applied recent methods, were adopted for the resource vulnerability assessment of a humid temperate karst region, north of Iran. Comparison of water bacterial content and dis...

Catch per unit efforts and impacts of gears on fish abundance in an oxbow lake ecosystem in Eastern India

Background: Oxbow lakes are abundant in indigenous fishes, but they are subject to unsustainable fishing practices, potential overexploitation, and indiscriminate use of fine-meshed fishing gear. To quantify the catch per unit effort (CPUE) and impact of fishing gears on fish abundance, a survey was carried out in an oxbow lake in eastern India. Methods: The gear-wise CPUE for fish caught in...
